Sick of Missing Papers from School? Try Our Sunday Ritual

Here at Kid CenterEd we take a holistic approach to supporting families. Because of years of child development and parenting training, I often find myself in a dual role of teaching parenting techniques while also helping parents navigate the special education process.

Is the librarian hounding you for an overdue book? Do you often complain that missing school papers don’t make it home?

Start a new Sunday night ritual, backpack dump. Every Sunday night gather the kids and their back packs (give them plenty of room), unzip all the pockets and dump out the contents on the floor. Have a garbage bag and recycling bin close by for the rotten apples and miscellaneous notices.

Make three piles— items to keep, stuff to toss, and things to go back into the backpack. You might be surprised what you find, the missing library book or homework, perhaps?

We make it fun and a routine, so the kids don’t feel punished when items go missing. The Sunday Backpack Dump can be a good time to help your child organize their binders or communication folder for the school week ahead.
