Writing IEP Goals and Objectives/Benchmarks

Should the goals be minimal or lack significance, insist on having them revised. I’ve witnessed students with significant autism being taught to recognize symbols that bear no relevance to their lives. For instance, there was an occasion when I saw a girl being taught to identify the ‘No Smoking’ sign, prompting me to question its practical value to her.

Ensure goals are specific, measurable, achievable, relevant, and time-bound (SMART) to facilitate effective monitoring and progress tracking. Do not settle for goals and objectives that are irrelevant to the child or a skill the child already performs. Make the goals make sense using SMART.
